Copy of a Nicolas Maire violin bow 2010.
I worked for five years as the chief bow maker at the world renowned Hans Weisshaar Violin Shop. I started learning from Margaret Shipman who is very knowledgeable of bows, violin maker Nazareth Gevorkian, who was a professional jeweler, and bowmaker Jerry Ramirez. I also had an opportunity to go to the Oberlin workshop to learn from bowmakers Rodney Mohr and Jerry Pasewicz. After the initial training, I continued to learn from the Hans Weisshaar bow collection and the great French bows I got to see and work on at the shop.
Sartory style cello frogs in silver and ebony on left and in Silver/Copper Mokume Gane and African Blackwood on right.
I use pernumbuco, snakewood or ipe for making bow sticks, and a variety of material for the frog. The frog body can be made from ebony, mammoth ivory, or other tropical hardwoods. The inlays can be made from different shell material like mother of pearl, different species of abalone, and even stone or fossil. The metals can be different carats/colors of gold, silver or Japanese layered precious metal.
